Lettering & Letterpress at Signal-Return

This past July, I was pursuing the work of Hand Lettering artists and Calligrapher extraordinaire, Molly Jacques, when I came across a workshop she was running along side Joel Grothaus at Signal-Return in Detroit, MI. I had researched taking one of Molly's Calligraphy classes before, but they were often in places like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago and just a bit too far away.

This workshop was held on two consecutive Saturdays in September. Detroit is just over a three hour drive from where I live, so I began the drive at 5:30am in order to arrive at Signal-Return for 10:00am. The first Saturday was Hand Lettering taught by Molly where we illustrated letter formations and created a composition that would be turned into a letterpress plate.

Signal-Return has a few different printing presses that the class was able to learn and experiment with during the second portion of the workshop. I loved the straightforward nature of the presses. I hope to find one closer to home that I can experiment with sometime soon!
